“Brain-Computer Interfaces: Applications, Challenges, and Policy Options” a report from the US Government Accountability Office (GAO)
December 17, 2024
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has published a report, “Brain-Computer Interfaces: Applications, Challenges, and Policy Options” (GAO-25-106952), addressing implantable and wearable BCI systems. It nicely highlights the need and potential for implantable BCIs to benefit individuals with disabilities. The report identifies key policy challenges, including brain signal data ownership, privacy, long-term device support, and Medicaid/private insurance coverage. The GAO proposes eight policy options to mitigate these challenges, such as fostering Medicaid-BCI developer coordination and ensuring consumer data control. Members of the iBCI-CC contributed to the report, supporting its mission to promote equitable BCI access, ethical practices, and sustainable user support.
